Installing on Android
WARNING: There is currently no free way to play Sonic: Lock & Load on an Android
device.
There used to be a FOSS port of Freedoom to Android, but that hasn't gotten updates in ages and doesn't
even work on my phone. Even if it did, it runs a horribly outdated version of GZDoom.
This setup relies entirely on Delta Touch, which is a paid app that is not FOSS.
If you want to play Sonic: Lock & Load on the go, you may want to consider getting a
handheld PC like an ROG Ally or a
Steam Deck. You could even get away with a
hacked Nintendo Switch if the Nintendo ninjas don't get you.
Requirements
- Android 4.1 or later
- Delta Touch ($2.49, yeah, I'm sorry, you need to pay for this, it has DRM which is cringe but it is what it is)
- DOOM II: Hell on Earth's
doom2.wad
(you can get DOOM II from Steam or GOG) - Freedoom: Phase 2's
freedoom2.wad
if you don't want to use DOOM II
Setting up Delta Touch
Upon starting up Delta Touch, complete the first time setup.
When choosing a path to store the app's data, go with Internal Storage/OpenTouch/Delta/
. You can actually put it anywhere, but for the sake of the guide, use that path.
If you want to use DOOM 2, transfer the IWAD to your device from a computer. If you'd rather use Freedoom: Phase 2, select freedoom2.wad
in Delta Touch's menu. It'll download it for you.
Afterwards, touch the arrow on the left side of the screen and hit the (settings) icon next to the GZDoom icon.
Set the engine to "DEV", which as of October 2023 is GZDoom g4.11pre, but it may be a different, more up-to-date version for you. Yeah, you have to use a pre-release version, but it's so much better than the super outdated g3.8.2, which is the highest stable release that's in Delta Touch.
Seriously, Open Touch Gaming, can you AT LEAST update the stable version to g4.10??
Getting a copy of the game
If you already know how to run GZDoom mods in Delta Touch, the process is exactly the same.
Simply download the Standalone PK3 for the latest stable version or git clone
the Sonic: Lock & Load repository for the latest development version.
The PK3 should be put in Internal Storage/OpenTouch/Delta/mods/
.
Running the game
Open up Delta Touch. Make sure doom2.wad or freedoom2.wad is selected, then touch the MOD icon and touch the (list) icon, then choose "Sonic-LockandLoad-vX.X.X.pk3" from the list.
Then go back to the main menu and hit the (play) icon to start the game.
And that's it!
You're now playing Sonic: Lock & Load. Have fun with it, and don't forget to configure the options in case you want to! Also, hook up a controller. Touch controls suck for a game like this.
If you have any feedback, open an issue on Sonic: Lock & Load's GitHub.
